Feta: Greece vs. the world

Is Feta cheese Greek? Yes, it most definitely is. Don’t believe us? Then take it from the European Commission, who classified the tasty cheese as a Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) product since the 1920s.

So then why are we even having this discussion? The thing is, cheese can only be called feta if it’s produced in Greece and has at least 70% sheep’s milk. As such, many people from various countries have called this more than a little unfair.

After all, pretty much anyone could make cheese with 70% goat’s milk. If it tastes the same, looks the same and has the same crumbly consistency, wouldn’t you call it feta!?
