Your contact lenses
Sadly, a lot of people leave their contact lenses in water overnight, but you should never clean them with water. When it comes to cleaning your contact lenses, you have to use an antimicrobial product that kills all of the germs and bacteria that can adversely affect your eyes. Don’t forget that water provides a favorable environment for bacteria to grow.
“The proper contact lens cleaning solutions all have antimicrobial ingredients that discourage bacterial growth. A contact lens stored in water may have a small amount of bacteria on its surface after a day of use,” says Jonathan Wolfe, an optometrist at Ardsley Eye Care. “The water only encourages this bacteria to multiply, and when the patient inserts the lens again the following day, that colony of bacteria is given the opportunity to move onto the cornea and cause ulceration.”

I am a silk dying artist. I use water all the time to clean silk items. The key is total immersion. You are right though that spot cleaning will leave water stains. Silk fibers are just about the strongest out there short of kevlar. I wash silk clothing in the washing machine and dry on delicate cycle. Heavier silk clothing though does better with dry cleaning.
