5. Disappointment
Imagine having gone through a pregnancy with your second child, gave birth, and then have your partner not caring about you or your child. It may come as a shock, but it has been reported by many close to the royals that not only did Princess Diana think her husband was ashamed of Prince Harry, but his reaction was not one to denote a lot of fatherly instinct.
Prince Charles was seen attending and participating in a polo match hours after Princess Diana came home from the hospital. To make matters worse, Charles was allegedly complaining that the young prince “looked like a Spencer” and that his red hair was a problem. Somehow, in addition to Diana feeling like a disappointment because she could not cope well with what a royal had to represent, after being given no guidance, you turn around and think of your own child as a disappointment too.
Yikes, you are not supposed to think of your child in such a way. It is impossible for any of us to know how this first impression left an impact in the two’s relationship over the years, yet with the way the heir apparent has stopped taking the prince’s calls after he took matters into his own hands and renounced some of his obligations, we cannot say it was all roses. To think that the youngest prince takes after his mother the most, everything does not come as such a surprise, but rather a tragic coincidence.
6. Disregarded even in death
Diana died in a Paris car crash on August 16th, 1997, when she was just 36 years old. The tragic event shook the whole world, especially since the lady was known as the People’s Princess and was known for her charitable work and kind soul. Adored by many, she left behind her two boys aged 15 and 12 at the time.
We were told by her and by the people close to her that she had been disregarded when talking about her mental health, her problems, and the many signs that she was not okay were ignored while she was in the royal palace, yet the most tragic thing might be that she was almost disregarded after she died too: the royal family reportedly did not want to give her a public funeral, as it should have happened for an ex-member of the royal family, mother to potential future monarchs.
It took five days for the palace to make a statement about the whereabouts of the funeral, and many believe that the institution did so out of public pressure, not because they wanted to. The excuse was that the Queen wanted her funeral to be a public gathering rather than a pompous event, but with someone known as the People’s Princess, you cannot go down that path. Her royal funeral was televised and it was viewed by 2.5 billion people worldwide.
As a public figure, Princess Diana has been fascinating and continues to be so today, years after her passing, and we owe it to her to know as much about her suffering as we do about her happy moments and accomplishments.
