4. Wrong kidney surgery

A man went to St. Vincent Hospital in Worcester, Massachusetts for a check-up, but underwent surgery instead. The doctors mistook him for another patient, who was diagnosed with a tumor on his kidney.

He was supposed to go into the operating room to get his damaged body part removed, but the surgeons took the wrong patient in. The “never event” was discovered only after the doctors ran a few tests post-surgery.

The cause of the confusion was the fact that both men had the same name, but their age was different. However, the hospital didn’t pay enough attention and they had to pay for their errors.

5. “Miss-matched” brain surgery

The Kenyatta National Hospital in Kenya became very popular after some of the doctors there performed brain surgery on the wrong patient in 2018.

Both men arrived at the hospital unconscious and they were kept in the same area. The whole misunderstanding began when their identification tags were miss-matched and the wrong patient ended up in the operating room.

One of them had a blood clot in his brain, while the other one had a swollen head. They realized the mistake when they didn’t find the issues in the first patient’s brain.

Given the circumstances, everyone that was involved in this situation was suspended.
