The Fall River Cult
In a place already infamous for being the home of notorious ax murderer Lizzie Borden, the events that took place from October 1979 to February 1980 in Fall River, Massachusetts, could arguably be regarded as one of the catalysts of what would come to be known as the ‘Satanic panic’. A fear had been growing that occult or satanic rituals were taking place all over America and three murders would cement that idea in American minds.
It all began with the discovery of the bound and beaten body of 17-year-old sex worker Doreen Levesque under the bleachers of Diman Vocational High School by two joggers. Although the police would initially suspect that it was one of her clients that had bludgeoned Levesque to death, the discovery of the body of another sex worker by hunters in a wooded area on the outskirts of Fall River just one year later would change everything.
