While it’s an interesting fact that the largest municipal park in the country is the 16,283 acre South Mountain Park in Phoenix, Arizona, what’s more interesting is the smallest one. When I say small, I mean the smallest park not just in the United States, but in the world. If you happen to find yourself at Naito Parkway in Downtown Portland you might spot Mill Ends Park. It’s a 2ft wide patch of green with a single tree in its center. Planted by Oregon Journal columnist Dick Fagan, he would describe it as “the only leprechaun colony west of Ireland” at the parks dedication on St. Patrick’s Day, 1976.
