In the 1960s, while the United States was engaged in the Vietnam War (1955-1975), American youth demonstrated for peace and love during cultural gatherings, such as Woodstock. Artists like the Beatles were at the forefront of the hippie movement. In addition to protesting a war, hippies also criticized materialism and conventional values.
