In general, online scammers target vulnerable Internet users (seniors are a popular target for scams). Also, an elderly person may be more vulnerable due to dementia or other serious health issues as well as not being tech savvy. Scammers pretend to care about them while they collect their money and assets.
According to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), approximately 1.7 million fraud reports were filed last year, and $1.9 billion was lost to imposter scams, identity theft, and similarly nefarious pursuits. While it’s correct to assume that scammers are sophisticated, that doesn’t necessarily mean you can’t protect yourself.
