Selinunte, Sicily, c.2000 onwards
Selinunte was an ancient Greek civilisation in southwest Sicily thought to have been established around the 700s BC. Some 15% of the settlement was already above ground, including its five-strong temple complex, which has become a tourist attraction in its own right.
But keen to find out more about the classical civilization that once was, archaeologists have spent the past two decades or so excavating the site and uncovering heaps of hidden riches as they do so.
