1. Clean first, then disinfect

Take note that there’s a huge difference between cleaning something and disinfecting it, says Marcela Barraza, founder of MB Green Cleaning. Just to be clear, cleaning eliminates germs without killing them whereas disinfecting stops them in their tracks. That’s why Barraza suggests cleaning first and then disinfecting for coronavirus.

“It is very important that you clean [to] remove dirt and debris from surfaces first, because germs and bacteria might hide under the dirt. Once the surface is clean with the least amount of bacteria, the disinfectant will do its purpose by killing them,” Barraza says.

Leave the disinfectant to sit for 3 to 5 minutes so it can do its job properly. “If you spray and wipe right away, you are taking the disinfectant away before it can do its job,” she says.
