Subway footlongs are not a foot long

There is speculation that the length of Subway footlongs in New York City is around 11 inches, not a foot. The sandwich chain commented, explaining that, “With regards to the size of the bread and calling it a footlong, ‘SUBWAY FOOTLONG’ is a registered trademark as a descriptive name for the sub sold in Subway Restaurants and not intended to be a measurement of length.”

This issue was even discussed in court, but the lawsuit was won by Subway, “due to perfectly natural and unavoidable vagaries in the baking process, a very small fraction of sandwiches fell about a quarter-inch shy of 12 inches.”
