Lord Milner Hotel, Matjiesfontein, South Africa
Built by Scotsman James Logan in 1884 and named after the governor of the Cape at the time, Lord Alfred Milner, this historic hotel is reportedly riddled with spooks and spectres. It’s also a little gem of a place to stay on the edge of the vast and lonely Karoo region.
According to the manager, the hotel has a resident nurse called Katie who likes to play cards at night in her room. Intrigued? Ask at reception to be shown to her room. On the other hand, the ghost of Lucy – who died here during the Anglo-Boer war – may find you.
She’s fond of rattling doorknobs at night. Lady Milner, meanwhile, is also often seen wafting about the place in her long white dress (naturally).
