Haitian Revolution
Haiti was a Spanish colony until 1697 when it was ceded to France, which capitalized on its sugar, coffee, and cotton plantations.
Near the end of the 18th century, in 1791, Haiti’s black slaves took inspiration from the French Revolution and revolted against the exploitation they suffered at the hands of French colonists.
Fighting for their freedom and independence, Haitians created the first black republic in 1804.
