BONES
How fun were those JELL-O commercials back in the day? We never actually stopped to ask ourselves why we wiggle wiggled. We just either like the taste or, more importantly, had fun playing with our food.
That JELL-O is made of mostly gelatin, which in turn is made from collagen. It sounds simple enough, and you may already know about it. Let’s take a look to see where precisely this collagen originates. The bones and hides of primarily pigs and cows are first boiled, then dried. Afterward, they are treated with an acid, and finally, they are filtered to extract the collagen from them.
While this is another example of a non-vegan food product, you may be interested to know that there’s a vegetarian-based JELL-O dessert that contains seaweed. This product may also pack a plant-based gum called agar or carrageenan.
