9. Burglars know when you keep your back door unlocked
Please, don’t leave your back door unlocked! This rule applies to your ground-floor windows, too. Don’t leave them open. Burglars notice everything, including unlocked doors and opened windows.
Former director of information services for the National Crime Prevention Council, Leonard A. Sipes, Jr., says that the vast majority of burglaries occur because people leave their doors unlocked. As a matter of fact, the Bureau of Justice says that burglars tend to opt for properties with unlocked doors and windows more often.

Just make sure you lock your door every time you leave the house, even when it’s just to dispose of garbage.
