
Rotary dial phone
The first use of an actual dial phone happened in 1892 in La Porte, Indiana, and it was actually based on an 1891 patent by Almon Brown Strowger. After almost 30 years (in 1919, to be more precise), the American Bell Telephone Company began nationalizing the service for user-controlled rotary dial phones.
Now, rotary dial telephones are pretty unfamiliar, especially for youngsters. But if you still have one forgotten in your basement, you should give your grandkid a test. Ask him/her to make a call using a rotary dial phone. It will give you a good laugh; that’s for sure.

Kids with a skate key in their pockets weren’t wearing the leather boots with permanently attached wheels and axles. They clamped skates onto the soles of their shoes, using the key to tighten them in place. Not to “adjust the fit”, as the article claims.
