Kimchi: South Korea vs. Japan
Widely regarded as South Korea’s most delicious exports, kimchi is also the country’s national dish. But things get truly spicy when we try to figure out kimchi’s origin. Though we have hard evidence that the fermented cabbage dish existed 1,500 years ago, during the Atlanta Olympics, Japan claimed it as their official food!
Many South Koreans were shocked over the claim, especially since many say that kimchi is deeply rooted in their culture, with many households using a variety of vegetables from carrots to radishes as well as cabbage.
Western audiences mainly think of Korea when they think of kimchi while they’re more likely to associate sushi with Japan. Where do you stand on this topic?
