Horace Lawson Hunley
During the civil war the Confederate government offered bounties of up to $50,000 to anyone who could sink a Union warship and ease the Union blockade of southern ports. One enterprising engineer took up the challenge, Horace Lawson Hunley. In 1861, Hunley, with the help of fellow engineers James R. McClintock and Baxter Watson, would trial and ultimate scuttle their first submarine named the ‘Pioneer’.
Their second attempt, The American Diver, fared no better as once again, due to bad weather, it too sank. Third times the charm right? Sadly, wrong just doesn’t cover it. The third submarine was funded solely by Hunley, so of course he named it the H. L. Hunley. It’s first trial killed 5 of it’s 8 crew members and the second trial? Well, that one killed the entire crew of 8, one of which was Hunley himself as he had decided to take command to make sure everything went smoothly. It did not…..
