Dragons

Dragons are among the most ubiquitous and enduring of the world’s mythological beasts, with tales of them being found in almost every culture from the Americas to Europe, and from India to China. Most people know of a famous dragon as they have been extensively used in western fantasy literature in 20th century, such as The Hobbit by J. R. R. Tolkien, the Harry Potter series by J. K. Rowling, and most recently on the hit TV show Game of Thrones, based on A Song of Ice and Fire by George R. R. Martin.

Academics can’t pinpoint exactly when the first dragon stories were written but they believe the earliest accounts of serpentine draconic creatures come from ancient Mesopotamia and the ancient Near East mythologies. However, tales of storm gods battling and slaying giant serpents came be found in nearly all Indo-European and Near Eastern mythologies.

An explanation for why dragons have had such a long and enduring presence in cultures on every continent still eludes scholars and cryptozoologists. However, some beliefs range from the misidentification of some huge extinct or migrating crocodiles or perhaps Komodo dragons, a type of monitor lizard. Another believable theory could be people digging up massive dinosaur bones and inferring their existence from there.
