Occupy Wall Street
Inspired by the Arab Spring demonstrations, militant anti-capitalists took over Zuccotti Park in New York’s Wall Street financial district in protest of capitalist abuses, the growing wealth gap, and, according to economist Joseph Stiglitz, control of the world’s resources by the richest 1% of the population.
Such issues gave rise to the slogan “We are the 99%.” Occupation began in September 2011 and spread to many American cities as well as communities outside of the United States.
