Yellow vest movement
An announced increase in taxes on at-the-pump gas prices in the fall of 2018 sparked discontent in France and quickly inspired a protest movement. Motorists, wearing yellow vests, began to demonstrate in November 2018.
Protests highlighted the fiscal injustice of taxing lower-income workers in the name of the environment while abolishing a tax on wealth. Despite the movement’s singular spontaneity and lack of official leaders, it managed to land the Macron government in hot water.
