No matter how nice you ask, it’s not okay to be fussy about a certain menu item when ordering. Asking for way too many changes is rude. It’s one thing to actually ask the kitchen staff to eliminate the olives from your fresh salad and a completely different story to ask for a side dish sautéed with wine, butter, and garlic when the menu item version is boiled.

Your endless list of hard-to-please demands is something no waiter and kitchen staff wants to deal with. So, if you do want to change something to a specific menu item, ask for no more than three tiny changes. Whenever you think that a menu item needs more than three changes to be perfect for you, order something else.
