BEETLES
This next one will have you seeing red, literally! An artificial color you have probably already heard of is carmine which produces that beautiful bright red you see in food coloring. But, up until recent years, you didn’t know what that meant.
Fortunately, the FDA now requires all manufacturers to divulge whether or not red cochineal beetles are in the ingredients of a product. When the beetles are harvested in the food industry, they are dried and crushed to produce the carmine, then transformed to purple, pink, and red, which you can see in ice cream, candy, and fruit drinks.
