Vichyssoise: France vs. USA
Though the name suggests the fact that this dish originated in France, some food historians say it may have actually started off in the U.S.! Named after the French town of Vichy and served cold, the soup is made with leeks, onions, potatoes and cream.
The truth is somewhere in the middle, since it was a french chef named Louis Diat who came up with the recipe at the Ritz-Carlton hotel in New York, all the way back in 1917. He was supposedly inspired by a hot soup that was similar, from his childhood, but he added a luxurious twist to it.
Though the debate doesn’t end there, since other people claim the soup has Basque origins. A type of potato and leek soup was popular in Spain as far back as 200 years ago!
