Falafel: Egypt vs. Israel
This versatile dish made from chickpeas has become synonymous with street food all around the world. But where did these delicious spheres come from? Some say Palestine, Yemen, Lebanon, Egypt, or Israel, with the last two countries caught in an endless battle to be crowned the originator.
Stuffed in pitta pockets, falafel is often claimed to be Israel’s national dish. But the Egyptians claim they were the ones who came up with it, only they call it ta’amiya. In some cases, the Egyptian ta’amiya has also been deemed tastier than the Jewish staple, so some may consider that a clear win.
But is it? And what about the other countries?
