Wine Bottle Dip
Wine enthusiasts may have noticed the little dip at the bottom of their wine bottles. A lot of people use this little groove, known as a punt or kick-up, in order to pour their wine more easily. But the origins of the dip are quite different.
It serves as protection, so that your bottle of wine won’t fall and break. The added feature also helps increase the strength of the bottle, especially when holding high pressure champagne or wine.
Lastly, it also helps with cleaning the bottle. Stream or water is often injected inside at high pressure, and the punt allows it to disperse all the way around the bottom of the bottle, making residue removal a lot easier. If the stream were to fall on a flat surface, you’d only be left with one clean, circular spot, instead.
