Jimson Weed
Despite that fact that this tall, flowering and quite unassuming plant is native to Asia, it has found it way to the West Indies, Canada, and the United States. Producing funnel-shaped flowers and prickly seed pods, the Jimson weed (Datura stramonium) goes by another more alarmist name, the devil’s snare. It’s a name that this plant has certainly earned as it contains a mixture of tropane alkaloids.
These can have serious effects on almost every part of the human body but it poses a major danger to the brain. However, despite these risks, many people take the devil’s snare deliberately due to its hallucinogenic properties. This psychedelic components of the plant can cause dilated pupils, blurred vision, intense hallucinations and feelings of confusion, euphoria, delirium, combative behaviors, as well as tachycardia, and dry mouth.
While death is not a certain outcome, it is still a distinct possibility and even if the plant doesn’t result in death, the damage it can do to not only your body, but your brain, should give you pause before even considering ingesting the juices from the plant stem or flowers or swallowing one of the seeds.
