9. Installing sketchy apps
Apps with hidden malware are very common, according to Jason Glassberg, an “ethical hacker” and co-founder of Casaba Security. These apps infect legitimate app stores, as well as trick people into downloading them from third parties via smishing schemes (scam text messages designed to trick you).
So, unless you find yourself in a serious problem, avoid installing apps that you aren’t familiar with while on the road. Any new app can maximize your exposure to cyber attacks, and “the data within the phone can be a goldmine for hackers,” Henderson says. He suggests taking the old-fashioned route with printed maps and phone calls instead of GPS and texting.
