3. Chocolate chip cookies

  • Ruth Graves Wakefield (1903–1977)

This classic American staple was invented in 1930 by Ruth Graves Wakefield, an American chef from Massachusetts. Chocolate chip cookies were actually discovered by mistake in a restaurant owned by Ruth Graves Wakefield, called the Toll House Inn.

Her incredible story is engraved in our minds every time we take a chocolate chip cookie bite. One day, Ruth ran out of baker’s chocolate, which she desperately needed to finish her recipe. She tried to handle the situation with hope; therefore, Ruth swapped baker’s chocolate for a semi-sweet Nestle chocolate bar… and voilà—that’s how chocolate chip cookies were born.

Ruth’s cookies were so popular they increased the sales of Mr. Andrew Nestle’s chocolate bars, touching the heart of every single American.
