Why just buy a mansion when you can buy a whole town? Well, that’s precisely what Oscar winning actress Kim Basinger did in 1989 when she (and a few investors) ponied up $20 million to buy the town of Braselton, in her native Georgia.

Basinger had intended on turning the 1,751 acres of the 2,000-acre town into a tourist attraction complete with film studios and an annual film festival. Sadly for her she was already encountering serious financial issues after backing out of her contract to star in the controversial 1993 film Boxing Helena.

The studio would sue her for $8.1 million causing her to file for bankruptcy. As a result she and her partners sold the land for just $1 million. She would eventually appeal the ruling and settle with Main Line pictures for $3.8 million.
