Another item bought at auction, not as strange as a dinosaur skull though, was a 72 page leather-bound book. A book not might be an unusual item for a celebrity to buy, but the price will certainly leave you with your jaw hanging open. It cost $30,802,500, that’s just over $53 million in today’s money, for a book called the Codex Leicester.
Why the high price you ask? Well the book was published in 1510 and penned by the one and only Leonardo da Vinci. Purchased by Gates in 1994, it’s one of only 30 surviving da Vinci scientific journals. In this one muses over a number of scientific topics, including water, the moon, and water on the moon. Soon after obtaining this rare and expensive book, Gates had the pages scanned into digital image files and comprehensive CD-ROM version of it’s contents was released in 1997.
