Sun Dogs

Although the name sounds like canines on a summer vacation, a sun dog (or mock sun) is actually caused by the refraction of sunlight by ice crystals in the atmosphere typically appearing as a pair of subtly colored patches of light, around 22° to the left and right of the Sun, and at the same altitude above the horizon as the Sun.

They are actually more common than you would think as they can be seen all around the world, but because they are mostly faint, they go mostly unnoticed. The best time to see them in all their glory is when the Sun is near the horizon.
