Mammatus Clouds

Mammatus, meaning ‘mammary cloud’ form as pouches hanging underneath the base of a cloud, most commonly associated with rain clouds. Depending on the levels of moisture in the cloud, some pouches will sink lower than others which causes the hanging and drooping effect.

These formations were first described in 1894 by pioneering meteorologist William Clement Ley.
