Morning Glory
These spectacular rolling bands of clouds can occasionally, and most of the time rarely, be observed in different locations around the world. However, one specific location, the southern part of the Gulf of Carpentaria in Northern Australia, is the only known location where it can be predicted and observed on a more or less regular basis.
Because of the rarity of these cloud formations, little is known about the nature of this atmospheric phenomenon despite being noticed since ancient times. The local Garrawa Aboriginal people called it ‘kangólgi’ but it gets its ‘morning glory’ title as the formation usually occurs at dawn.
