If that wasn’t crazy enough, De Andrade believed that all boys born after 1981 were possessed by evil and had to be ‘purged’. In order for her followers to ‘qualify’ for passage on the departing spaceship when it arrived, of course, they would have to turn their children over to other couples, grandparents, or other guardians. And although her followers did as they were asked, that ultimately wouldn’t be quite enough for De Andrade and things would escalate from there.
By 1989, reports of missing boys started to suddenly increase, and although the authorities investigated, the reasons for the disappearances eluded them, for now. Four years later the number of missing children would reach 19 with the tortured and castrated bodies of five young boys would be discovered. Despite a brief theory that it was somehow connected to some medical expert as the castrations appear to have been done with a modicum of medical expertise, the police still had nothing.
