Ground Round

We’ve already mentioned Howard Johnson’s, but what we didn’t say was the fact that HoJo’s got into the burger business in 1969, as well. HoJo’s signature dish was called The Ground Rounder, and it was basically a half-pound burger.

Most families opted for Ground Round back then because the chain had a separate area for the kids. Plus, the restaurant’s method of “pay what they weigh” was really appreciated. Unfortunately, due to bad management, the company filed for bankruptcy in 2004.

Today, there are only 20 Ground Round locations, and that’s a really small number considering that in 1991, there were approximately 200 outlets.
